Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren Episode 1: Take Nothing Seriously

Chuuni1-4Returning from last year, Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren hasn’t done anything to change whatever your opinion is about the first season. While there are quite a few surprises along the way, like Shinka and Makoto’s new looks and some added character quirks, the main draw of the show remains largely the same: a fast-paced comedy with chuunibyou elements, with emphasis on character appeal, surreal imaginary battles, and general silliness.

Chuuni1-m1If you enjoyed the first season, there’s nothing in Ren that would prevent you from enjoying it. As for me, even though I’m starting to get a little tired of some of the more repetitive jokes, the general mood of the anime, combined with superior animation, is enough to keep me satisfied. Not to mention that the characters are adorable as heck.

Chuuni1-6The first episode deals with Rikka’s sudden move to Yuuta’s apartment when they’re supposedly both living alone, and the rest of the cast’s suspicions of non-marital cohabitation. While that sounded serious on paper, the anime treats it almost as a non-issue, and given the nature of this show, I don’t mind that at all. Rather, the first episode is more concerned about giving the characters an excuse to get together and provide humor.

Chuu2Koi is at its best when it’s making fun of its characters, either induced by the situation, another character, or self-inflicted. The best examples of this are demonstrated by Sanae taking jabs at Shinka during the opening ceremony, Shinka’s cheese-powered revenge, and Touka pulling dirty magazines out of hammerspace while Yuuta panics. And of course, the fight scenes are done in a way that does not take itself seriously, while still winning against most action-oriented anime.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren, while having minimal development, remains a fun and lighthearted series, much like the first series before it. Enjoyment highly depends on the individual’s sense of humor and moe tolerance, so as always, take this review with a grain of salt.

Aside: I kind of like Shinka’s new look. It’s not everyday that you see female anime characters in regulation attire and Sanae and Rikka also look cute with their hair down. KyoAni should mix things up like this more often.
